COURSE OVERVIEW

Fibre Optic Networks: FTTx & DWDM

From splicing and OTDR analysis to FTTx architectures and DWDM transport, for fibre technicians and engineers.

Overview

This course develops the skills needed to build, test and maintain fibre networks for telecom carriers and data centre interconnection. It covers outside-plant and inside-plant fibre, splicing and enclosures, OTDR interpretation, FTTx/PON architectures and DWDM transport systems.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Plan and document fibre routes, splice plans and loss budgets
  • Perform and verify fusion and ribbon splicing to quality standards
  • Interpret OTDR traces and locate faults
  • Describe FTTx and PON architectures, including OLT/ONT turn-up
  • Explain CWDM/DWDM systems, amplifiers and coherent optics
  • Apply safe working practice for optical and outside-plant work

Module Outline

  1. Module 1: Fibre network planning and documentation
  2. Module 2: Outside-plant and inside-plant cable types
  3. Module 3: Fusion, ribbon and mass-fusion splicing
  4. Module 4: Splice enclosures and closures
  5. Module 5: OTDR testing and trace analysis
  6. Module 6: FTTx and PON architectures
  7. Module 7: CWDM and DWDM fundamentals
  8. Module 8: Coherent optics and data centre interconnect
  9. Module 9: Fault finding and restoration

The module outline is indicative and may be refined as materials are updated.
