COURSE OVERVIEW

Modern Telecom Networks: 5G, Transport & IP/MPLS

How telecom carriers build today’s networks: 5G RAN and transport, optical and packet networks, IP/MPLS, timing and operations.

Overview

This course explains how modern carrier networks are put together and operated. It covers 5G architecture and transport (fronthaul, midhaul and backhaul), optical and packet transport, IP routing and MPLS services, synchronisation and network operations, giving field and network engineers the end-to-end view that telecom carriers expect.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe 5G RAN and core architecture and transport requirements
  • Explain optical and packet transport technologies used by carriers
  • Describe IP routing protocols and MPLS-based services
  • Explain timing and synchronisation requirements
  • Commission, test and troubleshoot transport services
  • Work effectively with NOC processes and OSS tools

Module Outline

  1. Module 1: Carrier network architecture today
  2. Module 2: 5G RAN, core and network slicing
  3. Module 3: Fronthaul, midhaul and backhaul
  4. Module 4: Optical transport: OTN and DWDM
  5. Module 5: Ethernet services and carrier Ethernet
  6. Module 6: IP routing: OSPF, IS-IS and BGP
  7. Module 7: MPLS, VPNs and traffic engineering
  8. Module 8: Timing and synchronisation: SyncE and PTP
  9. Module 9: Commissioning, OAM and troubleshooting
  10. Module 10: Network operations and automation

The module outline is indicative and may be refined as materials are updated.
