COURSE OVERVIEW

Telecom & Network Fundamentals

The essential vocabulary, architecture and technologies of modern telecom and data networks.

Overview

This course gives newcomers a structured introduction to how networks are built and operated: access, aggregation and core; copper, fibre and radio; IP basics; and the role of standards. It is the recommended starting point for anyone heading towards fibre, field or network roles with telecom carriers or data centre operators.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Use core telecom and networking terminology accurately
  • Describe access, aggregation and core network layers
  • Distinguish copper, fibre and radio transmission and their uses
  • Explain basic IP addressing, switching and routing concepts
  • Describe how data centres and carrier networks interconnect

Module Outline

  1. Module 1: Introduction to telecom and digital infrastructure
  2. Module 2: Network architecture: access, aggregation and core
  3. Module 3: Transmission media: copper, fibre and radio
  4. Module 4: Ethernet, switching and VLANs
  5. Module 5: IP addressing and routing basics
  6. Module 6: Mobile networks from 4G to 5G
